　　她的父亲是一名由技师改行的英国艺术家，母亲则是津巴布韦的一名护士。桑迪出生于赞比亚，她的名字也是“被爱的人”的意思。 　　桑迪5岁时，因政局动荡，举家回到了英国。桑迪16岁便学习芭蕾，然而，背伤使她不得不放弃舞蹈。幸运的是，同年，她赢得了《情挑玉女心》一片的非洲女孩一角，从此步入娱乐圈。六年后，在她拍摄BBC的电视电影《在你梦中》时，与该剧编剧奥立佛·帕克坠入爱河，两人于1998年结婚。在兼顾演艺事业的同时，桑迪还在剑桥大学学习，取得了人类学的学位。为了不与丈夫分开，她放弃了与卡麦隆·迪娅兹，德鲁·拜瑞摩尔合作演出《查理的天使》的机会，转而投入了帕克编剧的《那是个意外》的演出，而她的第一个孩子也将在4个月后出世。 　　早在1990年，她的电影处女作《情挑玉女心》就是与妮可·基德曼一起拍摄的。在1995年的《杰斐逊在巴黎》中，她扮演充满诱惑力的女奴情人与尼克·诺特演对手戏；在《夜访吸血鬼》中她与布莱德·彼特、汤姆·克鲁斯在同一部电影中亮相。1998年对桑迪来说是极为重要的一年，她出演了《被爱的人》和《包围》两片，分别与名导乔纳森·德米（《沉默的羔羊》的导演）及布鲁斯·威利斯、丹泽尔·华盛顿等大明星合作。评论界对其在两片中的出色表演给予特别的好评。1999年的《名利场》杂志更是将她作为封面人物。《被爱的人》的制片爱德华·萨克森认为：“以她与生俱来的天赋和智慧，她能做任何她想做的事。”桑迪成了好莱坞炙手可热的新秀。这一切，使得汤姆·克鲁斯极力推荐她作为《碟中谍2》的女主角。
