罗莎里奥·道森有波多黎各人、本土美国人、古巴人、非洲裔美国人爱尔兰人的复杂血统，她在纽约下东区的贫民窟长大成人。罗莎里奥·道森碧眼深陷、绛唇饱满，现在已是赫赫有名的性格女星，多年来的角色履历始终给人“肉体派女优”的不良印象，尤其是《罪恶之城》中，罗莎里奥·道森扮演的妓女头领“引爆鼻血”的惊艳造型，成为该片的重要话题之一。罗莎里奥·道森也曾在《亚历山大大帝》中饰演亚历山大大帝的皇后罗克珊娜。在电影《 珀西·杰克逊和闪电窃贼 》中，罗莎里奥·道森饰演冥后珀耳塞福涅。 　 道森15岁时，坐在门廊上看着某个不说话的东西正发疯似的傻笑时，恰巧被偶然经过的导演拉里·克拉克慧眼相中，让她在其导演的《半熟少年》中饰演角色。道森在这部倍受争议的影片中把一个问题少女演绎得惟妙惟肖，上映后赞誉之声铺天盖地。她表演朴实自然，令人震撼。影片充斥了大量《利未记》（《圣经》中的一卷）中严禁行为的对白，还有她失去童贞时屁股挨蚊咬的对白。 此后，她星途高照，频频受到好莱坞大导演的惠顾。在以后的11年中，她接连拍摄了25部影片。她拍摄的有些影片，比如与艾迪·墨菲（Eddie Murphy）联袂主演的《布鲁托·纳什月球历险记》（The Adventures of Pluto Nash）已经可以删除了。但是像《第25小时》（25th Hour）、《吉屋出租》、《罪恶之城》之类的影片，造就她成为了几乎家喻户晓的明星。2007年，道森出演了《罪恶之城》导演罗德里格兹与昆汀·塔伦蒂诺联合执导的《刑房》，再次塑造了性格劲爆的女郎形象。眼下除了要出演《罪恶之城2》，她的档期已经排得满满。接拍百老汇的成名经典翻拍作《吉屋出租》让道森一跃担纲女主角，其表演功底自然非比寻常。 2014年12月16日，罗莎里奥·道森获得美国评论家选择奖最佳喜剧女演员奖年度提名
