迈克尔·凯恩生于伦敦南郊脏乱的伯芒德赛地区，他出身寒门，父亲以运鱼为生、母亲是个女佣。凯恩在霍斯海姆剧团应聘了舞台助理的职位，终于找到了事业的起点。他将自己的名字由迈克尔·米考怀特改成了迈克尔·凯恩，以纪念他最喜爱的一部电影《凯恩号哗变》。 1956年至1962年间，凯恩出演了一些小角色，但却并没有引起多大关注。这种状况直到1963年凯恩拍摄了史诗探险影片《祖鲁》(Zulu)后才发生了根本变化，凯恩在众星云集的影片当中担任了主要角色，这使他在英国影坛开始小有名气。凯恩又在1966年的影片《柏林葬礼》(Funeral in Berlin)和1967年的《千金大脑》(The Billion Dollar Brain)中接连扮演了特工。经过了12年的默默无闻和星途暗淡，迈克尔·凯恩终于闯入了观众的视野，影片《Ipcress Files》不仅奠定了凯恩在英国影坛的地位，而且使他在1967年拍摄的影片《阿尔菲》(Alfie)赢得了国际声誉，凯恩也获得了金球奖而且得到了奥斯卡奖提名。 作为六十年代末期和七十年代初期世界影坛的风云人物，凯恩主演了1969年的经典动作喜剧《意大利工作》，被公认为英国电影的巅峰佳作。此外他还在1972年主演了《侦探》，这部影片为凯恩赢得了第二次奥斯卡奖提名。凯恩在1978年演出了另外一部倍受好评的影片《加州套房》(California Suite)，这部影片由他与著名女影星简·方达、麦基·史密斯等共同主演，并奠定了凯恩在国际影坛的地位。八十年代，凯恩凭借1983年的影片《教导丽塔》(Educating Rita)又一次获奥斯卡奖提名，1986年他以影片《汉娜姐妹》而获得当年的奥斯卡最佳男配角奖。1998年他出演了独立制片的电影《哑巴歌手》(Little Voice)，并因此片而再次荣获金球奖。 除此之外，凯恩还在1993年因在英国影坛的杰出表现而被授予爵位头衔。1997年，凯恩被《帝国》杂志选入“历史上最有影响的百位男影星”之列，位居第55位。 晚年的迈克尔·凯恩成功地经营着伦敦一间餐馆，并受到年轻一代影人的尊敬，人们无不把他视作魅力永恒的英国影坛偶像。
