坎通纳早年出身于法国俱乐部欧赛尔、效力过马赛等多家法国俱乐部。1991年坎通纳转战英国加盟利兹联队，第一季便赢得联赛冠军。于是1992年11月，坎通纳以一百万镑的转会费由利兹联队转会曼联。 坎通纳加入标志着曼联王朝的开始，在坎通纳的精湛球技及领军能力下，曼联1993年、1994年两夺英超冠军，其中1994年更成为双料冠军(联赛、足总杯)，坎通纳联赛34场首发攻入18球。当时曼联基本上是由坎通纳带起全队，但坎通纳火爆脾气也是众所周知的。1995年坎通纳以飞脚踢向一个水晶宫球迷，除了被罚停赛十个月外，还被判坐监两星期，后来才改为社会服务。这事件不但影响了坎通纳，还连累曼联在1994-95年赛季失去英超冠军，由布莱克本流浪者取走。 1995年下旬坎通纳再次复出，当时外界均纷纷质疑坎通纳的作风，但坎通纳却能抛开过去，专心比赛，凭著无懈可击的演出、沉着以及勇气，嬴到外界一致好评。1996年1月，纽卡斯尔联队联赛领先曼联多达12分，但是曼联随后连战连捷，坎通纳更多次在1-0的关键胜利中入球，包括1996年足总杯决赛。球队最终夺得1996年的联战平足总杯双料冠军，坎通纳也成为历史上第一个捧起足总杯的外籍（指非英国）队长。坎通纳在1996年当选英格兰足球先生，成为自1968年的佐治贝斯后，首个获得这个崇高殊荣的曼联球员。 1997年5月，曼联卫冕英超冠军，也是坎通纳率队第四次赢得英超冠军和个人第五个英格兰顶级联赛冠军。但就在坎通纳31岁生日前夕，在未解释原因的情况下坎通纳突然宣布退休。坎通纳的离去令曼联再一次失去重心，单在翌季曼联便四大皆空。除了一些主将如杰斯和坚尼受伤长期缺阵外，缺少像坎通纳一样的重心人物，也是重要原因。 虽然坎通纳没有解释他退休的原因，但由于坎通纳在曼联的地位深远地影响了足球界，故坎通纳退休后也花了不少时间在足球事业，除此之外还包括演戏与及组织沙滩足球比赛等等。2004年六月英国太阳报更报道，坎通纳将可能回到曼联担任教练工作，而一名接近曼联官方的经理人亦表示：“现在有两名人选(担任教练工作)，其中一个会是坎通纳。”于2006年，坎通纳为耐克拍制了一系列的足球广告，并在全球多个地方播放。
