大卫·休默身高1.88米出生在纽约，在洛杉矶长大，父母都是律师。所以他一直都在考虑要成为一个医生或者和父母一样成为律师。但他在比弗利山中学读书时，教导主任偶然建议他参加西北大学短期表演班的戏剧表演的学习。虽然这次学习纯粹是偶然，但是他发现了自己是个好演员，更重要的是他热衷演戏。所以当他完成了课程后被鼓励在芝加哥西北大学参加一个暑期计划，之后他就确定了自己要走演戏这条路。高中毕业后，休默因为此前的经历入读西北大学。1988年毕业，得到了演讲/戏剧专业的学士学位。同年，他和7个要好的同学在芝加哥成立了Looking glass戏剧公司，7人既是演员、编剧也是导演，几人导演和参演了不少片子。现在他仍经营着这公司，为解决财政问题，他在一些戏剧中演出，也导演一些其他的片子。在1993年，休默初次在电视剧里登场，成为喜剧Monty的正式演员。因为休默众多出色的表现，1994年，NBC电视台的经典情景喜剧《老友记》开拍前，制作人为休默度身定做了罗斯·盖勒一角，休默不用试镜就得到了这个角色。有些讽刺的是，休默是在不情愿的情况下接受了罗斯一角，因为他不想再演情景喜剧。但优秀的表现还是让他在1995年被提名艾美奖喜剧类最佳男演员。不满足于《老友记》的成功，休默客串了众多在《老友记》中体验不到的角色，如《纽约重案组》。扩大了自己的兴趣范围，参加了多部影片的编剧、制片和导演。有几集《老友记》就是他导演的。大卫·休默证明了自己是个出色的演员，而且就算他不想再演戏，他也可以从事编剧或导演。他比自己所预期的要成功的多。 2010年10月13日，大卫·休默亲口证实，已于今年6月和25岁女友佐伊·巴克曼（Zoe Buckman）秘密完婚。大卫·休默和佐伊·巴克曼2007年相识，当时佐伊·巴克曼还是一名餐厅女招待，后转型当摄影师，2010年3月份之时，两人传出过订婚的消息。佐伊·巴克曼是个英国人，居住于北伦敦，和大卫·休默结婚后，她已随丈夫搬往洛杉矶生活。
