英国演员，童年时随母亲周游世界，因母亲的坚持，在RADA（皇家艺术学院）学习，并因主演莎士比亚名作《无事生非》获得好评。 30年代中期，在伦敦西区舞台和埃文河畔斯特拉特福剧院上演莎士比亚的《哈姆雷特》、《科里奥兰纳斯》等古典名剧。 40年代投身电影业，在《The Way Ahead》和《The Way to the Stars》中崭露头角。1945年，因在著名导演大卫里恩的《相见恨晚》中扮演Dr. Alec Harvey,引起轰动，成为一线明星。接着主演了《深情的朋友》、《他们使我成为亡命徒》、《第三人》等知名电影。进入50年代，因个人气质变化，以出演战争题材的电影为主。晚年曾和安东尼.霍普金斯、休.格兰特联合出演《天伦梦醒》。 1960年，凭借《儿子与情人》，获得奥斯卡最佳男主演的提名。 1988年1月7日，因支气管炎去世，享年74岁
