阿尔·马修斯1942年11月21日出生于美国纽约州纽约市布鲁克林，是一位民谣歌手和音乐表演者，在英国生活期间从事专业工作。后来他转向表演，但继续写作和唱歌。马修斯以创造两个重要的历史第一而闻名。在越南战争期间执行战斗任务时，马修斯成为第一位因功晋升为中士（E-5）的黑人海军陆战队员。马修斯也是英格兰国家电台“Radio 1”的第一个“黑人声音”。阿尔·马修斯于 2018 年 9 月 22 日在西班牙阿利坎特去世，距离 11 月 21 日的 76 岁生日还有两个月。他从未结婚，也没有留下孩子。
